There has been a history of cooperation between the Jewish community and the Black community in Pittsburgh's Hill District.

During the early to mid-20th century, the Hill District was a predominantly Black neighborhood that was also home to a significant Jewish population. Despite facing discrimination and segregation from the wider society, the Jewish and Black communities in the Hill District often found common ground and worked together on issues such as civil rights, labor rights, and housing.

For example, during the 1930s and 1940s, the National Council of Jewish Women and the Urban League collaborated on a program to provide job training and employment opportunities for Black women in the Hill District. The Jewish community also supported efforts to desegregate the Hill District's schools and other public facilities.

In addition, the Tree of Life synagogue, located outside the Hill District, has a history of working with the Black community. For example, in the aftermath of the 2018 shooting at the synagogue, the Tree of Life congregation received support and solidarity from many members of the Black community in Pittsburgh.

However, just like all races, colors, cultures religions there are always tensions that may develop because humans tend to skirmish over petty things and get territorial over housing, positions within social strata, and other disputes over resources. Nonetheless, there is a strong tradition of cooperation and solidarity between these communities in the Hill District and beyond.

Unity Weekend takes place each year in Pittsburgh. It brings together Ebenezer Baptist Church (Hill District) and The Tree of Life Synagogue and The date also celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King's Jr's birthday
