Past issues In recent years, one notable example occurred in 2018-2019 when the newspaper's editorial and newsroom staff went on a 14-month strike after contract negotiations stalled.

The union representing the workers, the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh, alleged that the paper's owner, Block Communications, was engaging in unfair labor practices.

During the strike, tensions between the newspaper's management and workers were high, with both sides accusing the other of bad faith bargaining. The workers eventually agreed to return to work in March 2019 after a new contract was reached, although some journalists chose not to return and instead found employment elsewhere.
